On October 20, 1980, U2 released Boy, their debut album. The four young musicians from Dublin were still far from becoming global superstars when they entered Windmill Lane Studios with producer Steve Lillywhite and recorded an album charged with urgency, tension, and youthful energy. On “I Will Follow,” “Out of Control,” and “The Electric Co.,” the foundations of U2 are already there: Larry Mullen Jr.’s direct drums, Adam Clayton’s bass, The Edge’s ringing guitar, and Bono’s exposed, emotional voice. Boy is a useful reminder for musicians: a band does not need to sound perfect at the beginning. It needs to sound like it has something urgent to say. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sLzV00gNUo
