How many notes does it take to turn an entire hall into one musical instrument? In a brilliant short demonstration from the World Science Festival, Bobby McFerrin jumps between two spots onstage and teaches the audience to associate each position with a pitch. Then he moves somewhere new—and the crowd immediately sings the next note, even though nobody told them what it should be. In under three minutes, a melody emerges from the five-note pentatonic scale, heard throughout blues, rock, jazz, and musical traditions around the world. This is not a scientific experiment proving that everyone hears music identically, but it beautifully illustrates how expectation, memory, and shared listening can help a group create together. Watch McFerrin’s body language closely: with almost no explanation, he turns strangers into a choir. https://www.ted.com/talks/bobby_mcferrin_watch_me_play_the_audience
