🥁 When the Drummer Is Also the Singer—and the Engine of the Groove In 2016, Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals arrived at NPR’s small office and turned the Tiny Desk into a tightly packed funk-and-soul party. .Paak sits behind the drums, sings, smiles, and leads the band—without any part of the performance feeling less precise. Across “Come Down,” “Heart Don’t Stand a Chance,” “Put Me Thru,” and “Suede,” listen closely to the space between the notes: the ghost notes on the kit, the bass sitting slightly behind the beat, and the guitar and keys leaving room for each other. The studio productions are reduced to a compact live band, yet the energy never shrinks; every musician carries more responsibility for rhythm, harmony, and character. It is a powerful arranging lesson: a deep groove does not come from playing more notes. It comes from the relationships between them—and from everyone breathing together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ferZnZ0_rSM
