How the Billie Jean Groove Was Built The opening of “Billie Jean” sounds simple, but its sound was designed almost like an instrument of its own. Drummer Leon “Ndugu” Chancler played the part while engineer Bruce Swedien placed the kit on a raised plywood platform, covered the kick with a custom blanket and separated the hi hat from the snare to reduce bleed. When Louis Johnson’s bass enters, repetition becomes suspense. In this Reverb video, the team rebuilds the setup and shows how tuning, isolation and envelope shape can transform a familiar beat. What makes a groove unforgettable to you: the pattern, the sound or the feel? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J39_VNQRyuM
