Joni Mitchell was born on November 7, 1943. She did more than write remarkable songs. She invented a personal way of playing guitar. Polio had left weakness in her left hand, making the complex chords she heard difficult to reach in standard tuning. Instead of simplifying the music, Mitchell retuned the strings until the instrument opened into unfamiliar colors. She developed dozens of alternate tunings and harmonies that move between folk, jazz and sound painting. In this 2022 Newport performance of Both Sides Now, her deeper voice and the years behind it give the familiar words an entirely new weight. When has a limitation led you toward a creative idea you might never have found otherwise? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxiluPSmAF8
